How to sharpen thinning scissors for dog grooming

The term ‘thinning’ in the world of hair styling and maintenance is to thin the appearance of the hair without altering the initial hairstyle. This term also applies to dogs, as some tend to have thick or bushy hair that can become thinner. To do this, you will need to use a pair of dog grooming thinning shears, one that looks like a pair of scissors with blades that look like metal combs. However, frequent sharpening would be necessary to keep it sharp.

What you will need to sharpen your thinning scissors is a sharpening device, a wand sharpener, sharpening oil, and a rag.

To sharpen, you will need to place the flat blade of the shear into the slot of the scissors and adjust the slot to hold it firmly to the blade. Then turn on the grinding wheel and put it in the sharpening and deburring position. Let the device work and then turn it off when complete. After that, you will need to sharpen each dog’s comb blade with a wand sharpener, which looks like a long, narrow stick that would fit between each tooth. Using the wand sharpener, slide it between each tooth by sliding it in and out of the grooves. This should be done four to six times for each blade in order to remove all burrs and sharpen it well.

Consecutively, rinse the scissors with cold water. Make sure it is thoroughly dry before applying a thin layer of burnishing oil to the blades. Then use a rag to clean up any residue as a result of the sharpening process. Last but not least, keep your scissors well lubricated, especially after each use. Pay attention not only to the blades, but also to the center screw so that you will not have much difficulty separating the blades.
